Adding “Nice” Numbers

Teach students to look out for “nice” numbers which are easy to add together, when adding multiple numbers together. These will usually be “rainbow facts”, or pairs whose sum is ten.

This is a more advanced skill, taken from our eBook “Bring It On! Mental Strategies”, for Grade 5 / Year 6 students.

The “Rainbow Facts” are pairs of numbers whose sum is 10. These are really useful facts lot of everyday contexts, including shopping, where you are often subtracting amounts from 10 or 100.

Students can learn these using ten frames to show counters in two colours which add up to 10.

Teaching the 5x tables is easiest if you connect them with the 10x tables.

Since 5 is half of 10, when you have pairs of 5 (eg, 6 fives), the answer will be half that number of tens (eg, 3 tens, or 30).
